Samsung + Victoria's Secret

Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 12:00 pm

How do you draw attention to a new product? Sex! Samsung has a new television line on the way, and the video above illustrates its key features in a cheeky way. Despite the presence of a Victoria's Secret model, it's only mildly sexy and generally SFW.

So why am I posting it? The TV's motion control feature appears to be heavily drawn from Microsoft's Kinect. Technology like this poses an interesting question for console manufacturers. With this tech becoming more common, does Kinect lose some of its appeal? Will Microsoft find a way to step it up at E3, which is right around the corner?

Ghost Recon: Future Intern

Friday, May 25, 2012 at 10:00 am

I generally don't go in for "parody" videos that are actually official marketing materials, but this one is pretty funny. Find out what happens when a Ghost Recon soldier takes an internship at IGN. I'd hire this guy.

Singularity of Purpose -- "Go Right" and the Power of Platformers

Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 5:00 pm
"Go Right," a video posted by YouTube user RockyPlanetesimal, is just about the most inspiring two-minute montage of platformers that you'll ever see.

My good friend and JD contributor Drew Paryzer sent me a YouTube clip last night.  It's titled "Go Right," posted by YouTuber RockyPlanetesimal (full video after the jump). You may have come across it already, as it's been going fairly viral.  If I were to explain it simply, I might say that it's a very well-edited montage of different sidescrollers throughout the ages of gaming. But that explanation does not mention that fact that this montage has a possibility of making you weep nobly like Odysseus on Ogygia looking out to sea thinking of his distant wife and son.

Why A part of it is certainly the gorgeous, sweeping Michael Nyman music that the video is set to. It makes the sight of goofy heroes like Darkwing Duck and Rayman seem downright portentous.

The other obvious reason that this might tap into gamers' emotions is the nostalgia quotient. And it is certainly fun to see so many old standbys in one video, patched together so seamlessly. But seeing old favorites from systems past is no new thing -- you can watch a playthrough anytime you want.

So what about the imagery of "Go Right" is so entrancing and, ultimately, so moving?

This 'Kill Screen' Makes Me Squirm

Monday, April 16, 2012 at 1:00 pm

I never watch TVs on Fridays, which means I always miss CSI: NY. Which also means I missed a recent episode about a murder stemming from a Gears of War tournament. Indeed, foul play is afoul, and the only achievement the assailant will get is jail time.

We once made a list of bad TV episodes on video games, and this one, well, it could be in the addendum. That said, the central plot point isn't bad, but we can't say the same fo video game references surrounding it. You don't need to be a detective to notice they've been shoehorned into the dialogue.

Breaking Bad As An Old-School RPG

Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 10:00 am
So, the Breaking Bad phenomenon has cooled down a bit since Season 4 ended. But not everyone is satisfied by sitting around watching other stuff until the next season arrives, and the cliffhanger is answered. For some, it is time to put all that love and inspiration into something tangible. Like a Breaking Bad 16-bit video game.

Enter the world-famous College Humor crew. They've skewered, lampooned, and comedified everything under the sun, and Walter White is next on the list. This will take you on an extremely abridged ride through the show's main plot line. Enjoy, and don't watch if you aren't 100% caught up with the show, because serious show spoilers abound!

Arkham City Trailer Shows Off Nightwing and his Skills.

Thursday, October 27, 2011 at 2:00 pm
Batman: Arkham City's out and the Dark Knight is punching every single person there (sometimes twice), but the people at Rocksteady are still hard at work making trailers to get to us shelling out more money for their surefire Game of the Year contender.

The Nightwing DLC is now due for a November 1 release, and how will anyone know if they want to buy it if there isn't a nifty video showing off all the cool things Nightwing does? I certainly don't have an answer, so there's a trailer after the jump to check out. This should help anyone make an educated decision about what to with 560 Microsoft Points.

Fruit Ninja: The Movie

Thursday, October 27, 2011 at 1:00 pm
Now slicing at a theater near you!
Fruit Ninja is one of the most insanely popular games around these days, and we all know what that means: a movie version is on the way!

Okay, not really. But if there was a Fruit Ninja movie in the works, here's what the trailer might look like, courtesy of YouTuber David Jewell, who also produced the Luigi's Mansion movie trailer we shared with you a while back.

Warning: This video does contain blood. Fruit blood, anyway.

Watch the Super Realistic Battlefield 4 Trailer Here!

Monday, October 24, 2011 at 5:00 pm
2017 is going to be the year of hyper-real with Battlefield 4.

While everyone is focusing on how impressive Battlefield 3 is, the clever Freddie Wong and his film-making band have given gamers a brief look at the future. The video's cool and all, but it makes us wonder if games will ever look this real. It also makes us wonder if we want that. Wong's vision isn't pixelated enough for me to shoot guys with a clear conscious.

Check out the impressive video after the jump.

Gears Of War: Mad World Uprising Is A Cheeky Gears Parody

Wait, there's ice cream in this game?
After we posted the "Bricks of War" Gears parody the other day, a group of YouTubers calling themselves sent us their Gears of War parody, which they call "Mad World Uprising." It's a lovingly mocking tribute to the series, set to the tune of of the track from the original game's iconic first trailer

We got a kick out of it. We think you will too.
