Xperia Play: A Belated Look At The "PlayStation Phone" - Review

Thursday, August 18, 2011 at 10:00 am
For the past couple of weeks, I've had a loaner unit of the Xperia Play, the so-called "PlayStation Phone." You probably know the basics of this device already - we've spent a lot of time covering it, especially leading up to its launch. It's first and foremost an Android Phone, but features hardware designed specifically for gaming. But with new Android phones arriving all the time and Sony's PlayStation Vita coming next year, is the Xperia Play worth your time? Get our take below!

Cut The Rope Plush Toys Are Cuter Than We Can Handle

Monday, July 25, 2011 at 4:00 pm
Cut The Rope isn't quite as huge of a mobile game as Angry Birds, but it's still quite the juggernaut in its own right. The puzzle game is one of those rare mobile titles that's popular enough to spawn merchandise, and the first licensed products based on the game are pretty darn adorable.

Behold the Cut The Rope plush toys, based on the game's mascot Om Nom.

Admit it, you kinda want one.

Fruit Ninja Now on Android.... FOR FREE

Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 6:00 pm
Fruit Ninja is one of those silly mobile games that everyone is playing, but no one will admit that they're having a fulfilling experience.

They're wrong, of course. Fruit Ninja is a wonderful game and the people playing it are really enjoying themselves. It doesn't need to be complex to be fulfilling, especially when the fruit has all those antioxidants to keep you healthy.

Previously, this game was in iOS exclusive, but the good developers over at Halfbrick have released their game for Android devices and they did it at no cost to the player.

Cannon Collision has Big Balls - Review

Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at 8:30 am
Ready, aim, balls!
This is my third installment of reviewing iOS apps crafted by Schwa Techno Solutions, developer of simple video games for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. The Drunk Test and Mind Strength were reviewed recently by this writer.

This morning, I'm talking about balls. Lots and lots of cannon balls. Balls bouncing around a fortified room. If you're not good at geometry (or whatever science and math and amazing guesses this game requires), the balls will collide and end the game. It's that simple.

This app's called Cannon Collision. My highest score was 71. I played my balls right.

Check out a ballsy screenshot after the jump.

The Drunk Test is a Decent Nightcap - Review

Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at 7:00 pm
As I've told my editor, I like craft brews, or brews that taste nothing like horse piss. Give me Witterkerke and Kronenbourg 1664, please, and some snacks.

When I reviewed Schwa Techno Solutions' iOS app The Drunk Test last night, I was finishing my third pint of Sam Adams East-West Kolsch. I had to prep (ahem) for the test, which guesstimates one's blood alcohol content (BAC) after one tries the Drunkness Detector, a series of flashing lights.

I failed my first test miserably, earning a BAC of 0.20. Was it accurate, or was I a bad gamer? I'll accept the latter.

Mind Strength Wants Us to Flex Our Memory - Review

Friday, June 24, 2011 at 5:00 pm
Schwa Techno Solutions has created an app inspired by Moonwalking with Einstein, Joshua Foer's memoir about strengthening his memory and competing in the World Memory Championships.

Mind Strength, as the iOS app is called, is a simple memory game, and it takes less than five minutes to complete.

Scratch that. If you have a great memory, and call on techniques to recall numbers, this might take you more than an hour. The game asks you one simple question: "How many numbers do you want to try to memorize?" You can select as little as 3, or as many as 300.

Check out my terrible short-term memory after the jump.

Angry Birds Downloaded 200 Million Times

Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 9:00 am
You'd think now that they're super, super, super rich they'd stop being so angry.
At this point, any download milestone involving Angry Birds shouldn't surprise anyone, but... damn. The world's most popular mobile game has now been downloaded a whopping 200 million times. Of course, it helps that the game is now available on just about every platform ever created, including Atari 2600. Okay, maybe not that one.

The latest version of the game, the browser version, has already hit five million web downloads, a mere week after it was announced. So in short, Angry Birds is more or less the most popular thing ever.

Angry Birds Rio Downloaded 10 Million Times

Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 1:00 pm
The birds continue their march towards global domination

No matter how hard I try, I cant' get away from Angry Birds stories. It's impossible. Writing a video game blog and not talking about Angry Birds is like living on Earth without being affected by gravity. It just cannot be done. Unless you're Superman. His video game blog is awesome, by the way.

Anyway, the latest version of Angry Birds continues to crush all challengers in the mobile space. Shocking, I know.
