Whoa, Comcast & Time Warner Don't Support HBO Go on Xbox Live

Thursday, March 29, 2012 at 2:00 pm
Okay, so this news is a little old I admit. But it is very important information about your Xbox 360 experience. Or, rather, the lack of HBO Go experience you'll enjoy on your Xbox 360.

Currently, Comcast and Time Warner have not signed on to support Microsoft's attempt to partner with the smash cerebellum-stimulation module AKA HBO. See, you want it to be one way. But it's the other way.

If you have an Xbox 360 and Comcast or Time Warner, you're in the cold for now -- sorry to say. It could be a hitch based on contractual or legal agreements, something that will be resolved in coming days, but we're not for certain yet. If you hit the link, I'll give you a list of cable providers that are A-OK with HBO Go on Xbox 360. Hit it!

Snap! Angry Birds Space Flying In This Week

Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at 1:00 pm

That is the sound of a slingshot. Are you having flashbacks right now to when you were on the bus, or at work, or on the shitter? You know, the last time you played a round of Angry Birds.

I suppose it would be vital for us to mention that Angry Birds Space is coming out this week -- on March 22, 2012 to be exact. You know, what with Angry Birds being the most popular thing to ever happen to anything ever. And while I am sure we're all still loving Rio, I know I could use a little change of scenery.

We see, in this trailer here, Rovio has the same base (incredibly unreliable/wonky) physics engine happening but in the mysteries of space. Sagan himself is smiling down on your little smartphone, proud of you for exploring the universe like he did. Sorta.

Laser Metal-Etches To The Tune of "Still Alive"

Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 1:00 pm

It has been a while since we posted on how hardcore and innovative game nerds can be, so I figured I'd unleash with something extra nerdy, extra juicy.

This is posted by a YouTuber named chjade84. It is a laser singing Portal's very famous "Still Alive" by Jonathan Coulton. Sure, it isn't perfect, but the fact that they got a fucking laser to sing makes their measly margin for error quite forgivable.

[Word for the cool post, Kotaku]

Mass Effect 3's First "N7 Weekend" Kicks Off Today

Friday, March 16, 2012 at 2:01 pm
me3 weekend.jpg
Here's some cool news for Mass Effect 3 players (on Xbox 360 and PC, anyway): Tonight at 5 p.m. PST, the first "N7 Weekend" kicks off. Special online challenges will be available this weekend, with, of course, special rewards. Here are the details, straight from BioWare:

·Any player who is part of a squad that beats the Reaper faction on Silver difficulty or better will unlock one Commendation Pack. This means that at least one member of the squad must be extracted at the end of the mission - this will earn all squad members the reward. Each player can earn a maximum of one pack and each pack contains a random N7 Arsenal Weapon. Originally only available as single-player weapons via the N7 Collector's Edition, these multiplayer variants will be exceptionally rare and are NOT obtainable through regular purchasable Reinforcement Packs. The Commendation Packs will contain one of the following guns at random: (1) N7 Crusader Shotgun, (2) N7 Eagle Pistol, (3) N7 Hurricane SMG and (4) N7 Valiant Sniper Rifle.
·Destroy as many brutes as possible - if the multiplayer community kills a combined 1 MILLION brutes within the hours of the challenge, ALL players will receive a Victory Pack as a reward.

The N7 Weekend will last through 5 a.m. Monday morning. The reward packs will be distributed on Tuesday and must be opened within seven days or they will expire. See you online.

Oh, and while you're here, check out the multiplayer stats in the image above. Impressive.

Xbox Raises Indie Games' Achievement Score Cap

Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 10:00 am

[UPDATE: I'm an idiot. This is actually just for the Xbox Live Arcade games. I got super excited and got my information wrong. Don't hate me. I made a mistake]

I play a whole hell of a lot of Indie Games on Xbox Live Arcade. We're talking a level tantamount to full length titles.  So I get righteously pissed off that I am only allotted a measly 250 cheevos for getting 100% completion on my indie games. I play video games for one reason and one reason alone: gamerpoints. Achievements. And on the Xbox 360, that shit is worth its weight in gold to me.

So, I'm jazzed that Xbox is allowing an Achievement Point hike up to a maximum of 400. Right now, that number can be reached by anywhere between 20 and 30 separate Achievements, but come June, Major Nelson & crew will be installing a 30 achievement, 400-point standard for everyone in the industry. So, guys like me can still have sorta impressive gamerscores without having to play all of those big, boring AAA games all the time.

Game Front Is Looking Sexy These Days

Thursday, March 8, 2012 at 4:00 pm
We've got quite a few good buds over at GameFront.com. We play this game of "you're sexy," "no, you're sexy," "no, you're sexy," all the time behind the scenes. But it looks like they've won this round.

They got sexier. And we thought we'd send some exciting news your way. They've gone through a massive homepage redesign to better provide gaming news, downloads, and updates to the community. Basically they went from a "cool" design to a "uber-cool" design. Just thought it was neat to see such a pillar of game culture kicking it up a notch. Head on over there and work your way through the pages. It is way more fluid and organized than before. We think you'll enjoy it.

Ubisoft Is Potentially Shitting On The Hope Of A Whole Genre

Thursday, March 8, 2012 at 1:00 pm

I'm not the first person to say that realistic first-person shooters are stuck in this cyclical spin where the time, in its relation to progress, has completely ceased. Like consumerism is this black hole and they've been ushered in to meet event horizon.

Okay, maybe I'm the first person to say that abstractly, but the sentiment is exuded from a large portion of the video game community. They are all about superhuman heroes killing brainless terrorists in this order: with a machine gun, with another machine gun, with a hi-tech plane, with a helicopter, with a sniper rifle, using stealth, and eventually with help from an exploding nuclear bomb. The plots all have cheap twists, and the characters are carbon copies.

But Rainbow 6: Patriots showed us one trailer, and it set me on fire. It was a total deviation from what we've seen, with real civilians being affected by the chaos, and incredible, ethically challenging decisions being presented in the initial debut. That's absolutely wonderful.

Too bad the leadership and brainpower that was driving the project just got shitcanned from the game by Ubisoft. And the replacement is rumored to be taking Rainbow 6: Patriots in a whole new direction.
