BioShock Infinite Delayed Until 2013

Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 10:00 am
In literally the worst news since the Hindenburg disaster in 1937, Ken Levine & his crack dev team have announced that their newest baby BioShock Infinite will lay in the cut until February 2013. The man claims that they are cramming more innovative shit into this title than the whole entire Call of Duty franchise (verbatim, I promise). And apparently that takes an annoyingly long time.

Also, the game will not be featured at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, which isn't that big a deal because plenty of information has been released about it thus far in its dev cycle. I just was very excited about it, as were most serious gamers out there. I'm curious if it has anything to do with the Wii U, or with Call of Duty's release date, or if they actually need that much extra time.

But in all seriousness people, I'm sure we'll have a stacked up fall release season and there will be dozens of games that will accelerate the waiting process. Keep an eye out for more information.

Former Minerva's Den Developers Create A Game Of Exploration

Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at 10:00 am
When I played Minerva's Den, I was absolutely knocked on my ass. I loved BioShock 2, for sure, but the distilled power of the Den story shook me. I loved it. Almost as much as the original BioShock title.

Now, some ex-devs have formed together to create a new game. It looks and feels a little bit like Amnesia: The Dark Descent, but only insofar as it relies on exploration in a wholly first-person perspective. Just you and a dot for a cross-hairs.

And it is about exploration, an old mansion, and returning home. It's called Gone Home, and will be releasing in the distant future. Enjoy this pre-alpha gameplay teaser.

The Unfinished Swan is 100% Down My Alley

Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 10:00 am

Obviously, I can't speak to its quality, but conceptually The Unfinished Swan is directly down my alley. It is beautiful, with an evolving game mechanic that allows players to splay various paints over a white background to create a kingdom. Not create, actually. Discover.

You see a swan disappear into a mysterious world of whiteness. And you follow it. The tagline is "The Unfinished Swan is a game about exploring the unknown." It'll be an aesthetic uncovering like nothing we've seen. I just hope they do something right with it.

This year. Downloadable. PlayStations only.

Did You Know There's A New Call Of Duty Coming Out?

Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Just when we think we've heard the last of Activision's baby franchise (for the time being, anyway), we get bombarded with fuckloads of trailers, interviews, prognostications, and detailed trailer breakdowns from hundreds of blogs and websites across the internet. It is pretty ridiculous.

But I should probably do the obligatory Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 post right now. This one has just as many helichoppers, miniguns, and thickheaded badasses as all the others ones, except it is set in an improbable 13-years in the future. It releases 11/13/12, which is just about the same time it releases every year!

Enjoy. It has a lot of explosions so if explosions make you crazy you should consider watching something else.

New Portal 2 DLC Brings Back Cave Johnson

Friday, April 27, 2012 at 1:00 pm
Okay, so this is a quickie, but it is vital: Cave Johnson -- arguably the best video game character of this generation -- is back for some DLC. And yes, it is a small tease into what will likely be a continuation of the characterful greatness.

The brilliant JK Simmons breathes life into this dude. And here's to a long and storied career for the man and the character.

Anyway, DLC suite headed to PCs and Macs soon. Like May 8, 2012 soon.

Live-Action Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Trailer!

Thursday, April 26, 2012 at 10:00 am

Look, Metal Gear is a great franchise -- indisputably one of the greatest in all of gaming history. But, "Revengeance" is the stupidest name I've ever heard. Here's a little English lession. The word is a portmanteau, which is the (now common) mashing of two words together to make one. They are "Vengeance" and "Revenge." Which is stupid.

"Vengeance" is a noun, it is a concrete instance where a malicious act occurs. "Vengeance" can also be used as an idiom, for emphasis -- "He attacked the stupid portmanteau with a vengeance." "Revenge" is a noun that can mean to bring one's own malicious justice against a guilty party. It isn't synonymous with "vengeance," but it is pretty fuckin' close. It isn't a good descriptor, like "Blaxploitation," which is "black" and "exploitation," that describes the caricature action films of the 1970s that explored complex race relations by exploiting the roles of each race in cinema, and sculpted the dialogue in society. See, that's smart.

Not to mention the trailer is live-action. Gross. Don't get me started on that shit.

This Mortal Kombatant Is A Classy Lady

Friday, April 20, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Just kidding. Classy ladies aren't really a thing (or, they are exactly that: things?) in fighting genre video games. But if you're a fan of Mortal Kombat, you'll be excited to see this Mileena trailer.

It is only a brief teaser into what the next iteration -- the PlayStation Vita version -- will bring, but if you like chicks walking awkwardly on on loose, pebbly ground -- with each step potentially being ankle-shattering -- then boy oh boy, will you be into this.
