What Are You Playing This Weekend?

Friday, March 9, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Hey people. I suggest you throw some headphones on and jam to Andrew WK right now, because it is so close to the weekend, you'll miss it if you don't get ramped up to make the most of it. And that's what the weekend is for: partying.

Now, video games can certainly be a large part of that party -- whether you're looking to put a Kinect out and have a dance party, or if you're looking to slay some Locust in Gears of War 3.

So which is it? What does this weekend bring? For me, I'll probably be playing through Journey for review, until I'm ready to party. When that happens, I'll be down playing some Big Game Hunter at a local bar. Because that's how I do.

Kickin' in the front seat, sittin' in the back seat. Gotta make my mind up: Which seat can I take?

Friday's here folks, and we've had another excellent week at Joystick Division. I couldn't be more pleased with weeks like these -- active commenting from our dear readers, a few breakdowns of new products, great, heartfelt editorials, and a few news posts to keep you up to date. This is it, ain't it.

Anyway, the weekend is here, which means there are 48 straight hours of video games to be played. For me? I'm going to drag my younger brother John out of the greater Seattle metropolitan area to come to my bachelor pad in downtown Seattle, where we will kick it all night infront of my magnificent television. We will then plop down on a couple of couches and load up games like Gears of War 3, Portal 2, and maybe even some Halo: Reach. It will be a mighty good time, sans doubt.

What about you, dear readers? Will you be partaking the delights of you PS Vitas? Or maybe will you find yourself rushing to finish Mass Effect 3 in anticipation for the third?

Also, follow up question: Would you date Rebecca Black? I would. Beacuse I'm attracted to strong, intellectual women who produce thought-provoking poetry.

Oh Shit, What Did You Play This Weekend?

Damn it people, I forgot to ask again what you had on tap for the weekend. I'm sure you're disappointed. Some Fridays are nutso for me, and I just got caught up in other things. Like my "day job." So, I apologize. I hope you didn't think I forgot about you.

I want to know now what you played this weekend. I'm going to disappoint you once more right here and say that I played about 6 hours of NCAA Football 2012. I know only a thin sliver of our readership likes football, but I love it. Enough to make up for everyone else. In the Road to Glory mode, I created myself as the high school football dual-position star (Woodinville, stand up). I am the starting QB/DT who gets recruited by all the top schools in the country... which makes this the most 'wish-fulfillment' video game experience I've ever had.

Also, I jammed on a little bit of Bastion, just to hear Rucks' voice again. What about you?

What Video Games Are You Playing This Weekend?

Why can't weekdays go as fast weekends? I feel like it has been years since we last spoke. And only a week!

Right now, I want you to slam on some headphones, click "Play" on that video and let Loverboy carry you into your typical Friday eve debauchery. I know I will. But beforehand: let's chat about games this weekend. What are you playing? Get anything good? Break open anything old-school that you've been waiting on?

I don't have much on my plate, other than Jak and Daxter HD. Oh, except JD columnist Aaron Matteson has made his way back to Seattle, and we're going to paint cities. See ya Monday!

What Video Games Do You Play With Your Loved One?

Oh hello beautiful. Didn't see you there...
Happy Valentine's Day, my good people. This Tuesday has all of our hearts aflutter with love, and the flowers are blooming and birds are chirping and chocolate is being inhaled at an alarming rate and nine months from now a ton of babies are gonna be born. This is the day of celebrating love.

And don't you think for a minute that the Joystick Division crew is a bunch of loveless loners. Not for one minute. As a matter of fact, we're about a half-dozen Casanovas who spend our days writing sonnets, wearing ruffles and frocks, wooing potential partners with our syrupy love-words. Actually, that's how we all hang out --in a big group on street corners, spouting off Shakespeare and drinking homeopathic love potions. It's a special kind of love.

Click the link, darlings.

What if Joystick Division Writes 140-Character Reviews?

Monday, February 13, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Spin Magazine is reviewing 1,500 albums on its Twitter feed.
There are, of course, mixed reactions to Spin magazine's plan to review 1,500 albums in 140-character tweets, posted at . Some say it's brilliant, reflective of the ways we distribute and digest communication in the digital age, whereas others say it's the beginning of the end of music criticism, and that such "Brevity is OK, but don't argue that it's equivalent to a full review. Quoting a line from 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' doesn't explain why Sgt. Pepper is a good album."

What do you think? Will the magazine's plan impact video game criticism? Is video game criticism meaningful in 140 characters or less?

Let us know in the comments.

What Are You Playing This Weekend?

Friday, February 10, 2012 at 2:00 pm

Thank god, we made it. We made it, folks. It is Friday. The finest day of any week. I swear, if I have to look at a grey cubicle wall for another minute without hope for the weekend, I'm going to fling myself into a river and let it take me away. Then I'll go live under a bridge somewhere and become a hermit troll-man who eats children and poops into a ravine.

Again, we made it, so that isn't going to happen (yet. Remember, the week starts over again in a few short hours). And I have a ton of video games to play this weekend. Well -- actually -- not a ton of individual video games. I have to beat three games in a very small time frame because I want you people to know what I think of them in an official Joystick Division review. And its not like I can do one game bam review, one game bam review, one game bam review. I was given the Jak & Daxter HD Collection as a collection. And I will appraise it as such. So far my verdict? It works in my PlayStation 3, so that's a start.

I'll keep you posted. Now post about what you're going to be enjoying over the weekend. Okay? I want to know.

What Did You Play This Weekend?

Sorry guys, I totally forgot to ask you what you were gonna play this past weekend. Usually, on Fridays, I like to test the water a little bit to see what readers are delving into, sometimes with the hopes that I will hear of something obscure and dive into it myself. And I totally missed the boat on that one.

So, we'll make it up today. I had a very eventful video game experience this weekend. I beat Braid again, which will surely send me into a monumental flurry of scribblings in my Unraveling Yarns column in the coming weeks. That game is positively wonderful, and I have a whole lot to say about it.

And, I played about 4 hours of Dead Space 2, which is another great game (although for very, very different reasons), and it's kind of put me in this thought process about the breadth of video game methods, and how some are more affecting than others, or more successful than others. Again, gonna give me a lot to talk about. You'll see those coming soon.

But I'd love to hear what you enjoyed this weekend. Anything new?

Hi, folks.

I can tell you, without a doubt, that I am glad this week is over. You see, I've been traveling for work, and while it's netted me some fun times, the fact of the matter is that I am not home. Home is a tough thing when you stray from it, and when you can't go back to it.

Plus, my Xbox is at home, which means it has been collecting dust for a week now. I'll be back Saturday, and I can tell you now -- watch out Trine 2, I'm going to play the crap out of you. Unless of course, Gears of War 3 gets to me first.

Because I have to review Trine 2, I will give it my all, as much as I can humanly stand. I got a review copy and have gotten behind on my reviewing. So watch for that, would you? And answer my question:

What are you playing this weekend? Any recommendations?

Good Friday to you, you marvelous, wonderful people. I hope you've had a more pleasant week than I have. You see, I live in Seattle. And if you've caught the latest news casts, Seattle is currently under an extravagant frosty aerial attack. Some dubbed it SNOWMAGEDDON. SNOWZILLA. SNOWPOCALYPSE. Basically Jack Frost just pinched a big, white shit out on us. We're up to our knees in snow, and thus, we cannot go to places. We are forced to sit inside and watch as the world crumples in a blanketed silence around us.

But, there is always good with bad. All the snow and spare time does allow a large amount of video game playing to occur -- granted, of course, that one of our many trees doesn't tip over and take down a power grid.

So, with that spare time, and with the awesome announcing of Resident Evil 6, I'm going to be playing Code Veronica X HD this whole weekend. Yep. Just me, the Redfields, and some underrated zombie action. What about you all? What do you have in store for the weekend?
