The Get Outside Guide

Camping is oddly under-represented in video games, unless you're talking about the much-maligned multiplayer strategy. That's kind of strange considering that essentially all action games contain a ton of what could be considered hiking.

The Gear: REI Half-Dome tent, Timberland hiking shoes and a bunch more.

The Apps: There's an app for absolutely everything. For a guide an app that points towards hiking trails in your area, check out AllTrails. Keep something in mind, though - there are still places out there where you won't get cell phone reception, thus rendering any app useless.

Even before I started my video game-inspired fitness program, I've always done a lot of camping and own a good deal of camping gear. Two tents, ground pads, sleeping bags, mess kits, I've got all that. This year I upgraded to a new pair of Timberland hiking shoes (the Pathrock low hikers in the video below), as did my wife (the Trail Wave). We've been out camping a couple times this year, and we've both been impressed with our shoes in terms of comfort, traction and breathability. You may notice that I've spend a lot of time on shoes in this guide. Once you get out and moving around a lot, you start to appreciate a good pair of shoes. And don't get me started on socks.
