Let's face it, your portable game system, mobile device or tablet does not offer the amount of volume that you need to achieve when sharing games, videos and music with others. Despite all the awesome features of the portable devices out there, speakers are almost never adequate. If you want to use any of your gadgets without headphones, you need a solution. iHome has one with the iDM11 rechargeable Bluetooth speaker.
The iDM11 is a cube-like shape with a flat bottom for sitting on a desk and is a few inches high - small, but not small enough to fit in a pocket. It comes with no carrying case, which is a bit of a bummer considering how many portable devices it can work with, including tablets, Nintendo 3DS, the PS Vita, and of course iPhones and Android phones. Much of its versatility has to do with the fact that it has cable with a standard headphone jack and a USB plug. It also supports Bluetooth. If you can find a gadget this thing won't work with, it was probably built in the 1980s.

On the rear of the speaker you'll find a collection of buttons and illustrations on which option does what -- from left to right: power button, volume down, volume up, and the pause and play button which doubles for Bluetooth syncing. Underneath it is found a switch that changes the speaker from either AUX mode (to be plugged in directly to an audio source) or Bluetooth mode to be paired. And finally, the Mini-USB port for the provided Y-cable meant for charging and AUX out. On its side there is even a small microphone. Yep, the iDM11 can double as a speaker phone.

So how does it sound? Very, very good. I tested the iDM11 with a number of music and video  services, and was very pleased with the results. On a couple rap tracks I actually had to turn the volume down because it pumped out so much sound. Tracks with deep bass can of course cause a little distortion, but what do you expect from a travel speaker? The iDM11 is meant for convenience and it does it right with a small design and better than average sound quality - I have another portable speaker set from another company, and the iHome unit simply blows it away in terms of nice clear sound. But for me, the biggest selling point is its versatility. The fact that I can use it with my Android phone, tablet and 3DS makes it a no-brainer.
