XCOM: Enemy Unknown -- will this game capture the spirit of the alien-obsessed early 90's?

As reported by several sites referencing a new Game Informer cover story, turns out that the X-COM franchise is not only getting the much-maligned FPS treatment, but will also be receiving a full, strategy-oriented "re-imagining" courtesy of strategy game titan Firaxis. The new game will be called XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and, if the picture above is to be believed, it will feature 400% more grisly traffic accidents involving aliens.

I had no idea that that original X-COM was such a big deal until I began to see it near or at the top of PC gaming Best of All Time lists. After doing some research, its MicroProse pedigree and near-universal acclaim seconded what I'd been hearing -- that this game was one of the absolute classics of the strategy genre, combining action, diplomacy, economics and, of course, those god-damned aliens.

I'd be interested to hear what fans of the original think of this.

It seems to me that if a reboot's going to be done, you want a developer that understands the original's essence, and it seems like Firaxis could be a pretty good fit.

For reference, here is a video of UFO: Enemy Unknown, which MicroProse and Culture Brain developed in the early '90s.
