PC gaming: Can you go home again?

Sunday, July 31, 2011 at 11:00 am
Is Battlefield 3 worth buying a new computer for?
My family's first PC was a 66 mHz 486 DX2 with 16 MB of RAM, a 40 MB hard drive, and an internal 14.4 modem. The thing was a beast. It crushed Doom, Duke 3D, and every shareware demo I could find. But I'm not telling you this to bolster my credibility as an old-school gamer, or as a jumping-off point to complain about kids today. No, I'm rattling off these arcane specs only to prove to you that, long ago, I knew what the hell I was talking about when it came to computers.

Those days are over.

Mass Effect 3's Beauty Pageant

Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 12:00 pm
The Twitter profile pic of a fictional Commander Shepard that inspired a real ad campaign.
Back in May, a Twitter account for a female version of Commander Shepard, the protagonist of the Mass Effect franchise, prodded Bioware's Director of Marketing, David Silverman, to produce a Mass Effect 3 trailer featuring Commander Shepard as a woman. Silverman asked the Twitter community whether they wanted a "FemShep" trailer, and received a passionate response in return.

Bioware revealed six potential FemShep designs at the San Diego Comic Con last week and posted them to Facebook, where fans can "like" their favorite rendition, which is then meant to become the "official" depiction of female Commander Shepard. Not everyone is pleased by this. Most of the negative comments hail from Twitter or Tumblr, but this GayGamer.Net post represents their collective jist.

The essence of the complaints is that Bioware has turned what could have been a statement about gender equality and strong female characters into a beauty pageant. I think this disappointment is predicated on a notion which has become popular lately, but which may not reflect reality, namely that Bioware is some sort of advocate for social justice issues. I asked Bioware to speak for themselves by reaching out to David Silverman.

MicroVolts and Brawl Busters Are Heading to Steam's Free List

Friday, July 29, 2011 at 5:00 pm
One of the coolest things Valve has done this year (other than releasing Portal 2) was allow free-to-play games on their gigantic digital download service, Steam. They started doing so several months ago, and every so often new games show up.

Today is one of those "every so often" moments.

Rock Hippo Productions has just announced that MicroVolts and their upcoming Brawl Busters is heading to Steam for the glorious price of free. Are you excited? I'm excited.

World of Tanks Creators Coming To Gamescom, Talking about New Games

Friday, July 29, 2011 at 4:00 pm
We love World of Tanks' methodical pacing. It provides a slow, purposeful shooter that is unlike any other game on the market. However, there's something cooler than tanks and it's coming to Gamescom: World of Warplanes!

World of Warplanes was announced recently, but the first time anyone is really talking about it will be over at the Calogne videogame convention. Which is cool, especially for those in Cologne. We know the Russians adore this game, and now they can check out it's awesomeness in person. At least we think. European geography was never our strong suit in school.

Brink DLC Washes Up For Free On August 3

Friday, July 29, 2011 at 3:00 pm
Want to try to play more Brink? Bethesda is releasing a new DLC pack called Agents of Change, featuring two new playable areas, a raised limit cap, and new weapons and outfits. It sounds like a substantial amount of content for the asking price, which is absolutely nothing, at least for the first two weeks. Agents of Change is free on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and Steam from August 3 through August 16. Good news if you're still trying to save or blow up the Ark, assuming the game's hobbled on-line components have been fixed. Perhaps Brink's post-apocalyptic class warfare story will resonate more deeply after next week's debt default destroys America's economy.

More information and images of the new areas below.

Legend Of Zelda's Ganondorf Is A Talented Song And Dance Man

Friday, July 29, 2011 at 2:00 pm
I've seen, like, a LOT of weird shit on the internet. Most things I could try and share with you, but Joystick Division doesn't have that kind of license, and we would get majorly in trouble if I did. So, I'm left with regular weird things like this -- a video from Random Encounters Entertainment.

It is a musical performed by a guy in a Ganondorf outfit, singing about his woes and the world in which Ganondorf lives. It is aptly titled "The Legend of Ganondorf: A Zelda Song." It is a full four and a half minutes, and I actually sort of love it. But, again, I love everything that's ever had to do with the Zelda franchise, so maybe I'm a bit biased. So please, do yourself a favor and follow me. I promise there's fun to be had.

Superman Takes To The Liberty City Skies

Friday, July 29, 2011 at 1:00 pm
Here's something I seriously never considered could be a real thing. I didn't necessarily not believe it could happen, per se, I just never considered it. Are you ready to guess what it is yet? Did the title of this post not give it away yet?

Yes, a PC modder has made an incredible mod of Grand Theft Auto 4 that puts the Man of Steel* high in the skies above the beautiful Liberty City. And you'll be able to do it, too. You just have to jump through some hoops. I'll show you some stuff after the jump.
