There's a rumor circulating about a release date for the strangely named Sony handheld, the PS Vita. According to a retailer in the United Kingdom, both versions (WiFi and 3G) are going to ship on November 4, 2011. Which is right in line with Sony's projected release date, as vague as it may be.

On their website, Shopto.net has a pre-order page for both of the handheld models, complete with ship dates, promo codes, and product information. But here's the kicker -- it has been twenty-four hours since the first sighting has hit and the page is still up and functional. Usually, when rumors abound, these sorts of pages are quickly withdrawn and all parties issue some shady apology statement. But they haven't. Something is definitely fishy here.

Shopto.net claims that the date was given to them by the Sony corporation, and that, as it stands, the pre-order page is legit. But no official announcement has been made, and Sony has come forward, claiming only that the PS Vita will ship globally later this year.

If this is true, it is a rather odd time to release a pricey new handheld. Many, if not most, handheld users are mainly console gamers, and that is right in the middle of the year's busiest time. It will have to compete with Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, Uncharted 3, Skyrim, and more.

But, either way, we'll confirm as the date draws closer.
