Extra Credits Artist Funds Surgery By Gracious Gaming Community

Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 3:00 pm

Allison Theus is the artist for The Escapist Magazine's video series, Extra Credits. Recently her career was in jeopardy. Her doctor told her she had a radial tear around her shoulder and would no longer be able to illustrate without surgery. In other words, she wouldn't be able to do her job anymore.

James Portnow--the series' writer--mentioned this on the Extra Credits Facebook page and Twitter feed. "I'm trying to scrape together everything I can, but EC has cost me a lot of money over this year," he wrote. Portnow also posted Theus' PayPal account, and started up a RocketHub to collect any donations and reward those who do.

The game community came in, and served above and beyond the call of duty.

I believe you can fly
You remember that super-awesome trailer released earlier this year for the upcoming zombie-kill-a-thon Dead Island?

Yeah, the one with the dead girl falling through a window in reverse. Oh! And then that slo-mo scene of the zombie getting its head nearly cut off. Oh-oh! And then that part where the zombie chick gets her arm hacked off.

Yeah. That was a cool trailer.

Anyway, it got a Cannes award.

GameFly Opens Office In Seattle, Right By My Place

Northwesterns, prepare to rejoice. You too, Alaska. A GameFly distribution center has officially been opened in Seattle, Washington, the single finest, most beautiful city in the entire USA. It will be the point location for Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska -- as the next closest one is Los Angeles, California, and we don't take kindly to Californians.

Anyway, GameFly has been notoriously sluggish in getting games out to the northwesternmost states for years now, and the new office should very quickly speed things up. Sadly, Hawaii is stick shit out of luck, but no one really cares. If you live your whole life in the sun, with phenomenally gorgeous people, beautiful water, and nothing but soft, sandy beaches, the last thing you need is a video game to show up on time.

Uncharted 3 Beefs Up its Online Offerings - Beta hands-on

Get ready for some crazy action
If Uncharted 2's multiplayer was a pepperoni pizza, then the online portion of Uncharted 3 is a supreme.

When I first heard about all the extra modes, customization options and tweaks developer Naughty Dog would be adding to the formula, I'll admit I was a little skeptical. I loved U2's online for its simplicity, and the list of additions for U3 was about a mile long.

The Uncharted 3 online beta launched Tuesday evening and, after pouring several hours into the new offerings, I'm feeling pretty damn good about what the final product will have to offer. In this particular case, it looks like all those extra toppings will result in a more delicious pie.

The video game world is now flush with thousands upon thousands of deep, multidimensional characters. But there was once a time when those thousands were closer to dozens, and the characters had only one dimension. That was the 8-Bit era, and most of our greatest video game icons originated with that generation.

Some of them barely made it out of the 1980s, while others have spawned entire genres and franchises that propel entire corporations to the top of the video game food chain. And we're here to look at those 8-Bit characters that defined gaming's early years. Please enjoy our look at the top ten most iconic, blockiest, and most memorable characters from ages and ages ago.

Hopefully it looks nothing like this.
Well, this is... unexpected.

We know that Activision is always looking for ways to expand the reach of its flagship shooter Call of Duty. The paid online program Call of Duty Elite is a good example of that. We wouldn't have been surprised to hear that announcement followed with with news of a movie, toy line, TV show or something along those lines.

But a convention? That one caught us a little bit off guard.

Angry Birds Shoots To Windows Phone 7

Just when we thought the Angry Birds trend was slowing, wheels-screeching, into its final station, a new bit of news has arrived. The crack-like physics-based puzzle game will be hitting the Windows Phone 7...today. So go buy it.

You can buy it for $2.99. The whole thing. Or, if by some weird twist of fate you've never played it, or are impervious to rave reviews, or simply just like getting less stuff, you can do the trial version for free. Now, developers Rovio, I'm kindly asking you, stop fucking porting it. I'm running out of puns for my headlines. They're getting sucky.

Your PS3 may be headed to Limbo
A few days, James Hawkins wrote an excellent piece about one of last year's best games, Limbo. You should really read it. I'll wait.

Anyway, that piece sparked a discussion about when and if the game might make the leap to the PlayStation 3. Our response: buy an Xbox 360.

And now, it looks like Limbo may be headed to the PS3 after all. We're assuming this leak was timed specifically to make us look bad.
