New Wii Gear on the way
There's a new piece of Nintendo hardware on the way. The problem is that we don't know what it is, officially.

That said, we've got a pretty solid guess. The "Wii Remote Plus" was outed on the package of Nintendo's upcoming FlingSmash. Since we've had a chance to play the game in question and experienced how important the Wii Motion Plus add-on is to that game, we feel pretty confident in saying that that Wii Remote Plus is a new version of the Wii Remote with Wii Motion Plus built in.

The revamp of the hardware makes a lot of sense. After all, the PlayStation Move is on the market now, and by all accounts it's more accurate than the Wii Remote, even with the Wii Motion Plus add-on. And Microsoft's Kinect device is right around the corner.

I'm not convinced that either Move or Kinect poses a serious threat to the Wii's dominance of the family game market, but it even so the increasing accuracy of motion controllers was bound to force Nintendo to get a more accurate Wii Remote into the market at some point. At the very least, the new Wii Remote Plus could promote cross-development of games for both Move and Wii.

FlingSmash won't have the mass appeal to truly popularize the Wii Remote Plus, but it's a solid way to introduce the new controller to the market. If the Wii Remote Plus proves to be the new standard as we expect it will, a refreshed Wii console bundle with Wii Remote Plus is likely inevitable.
