Ten Ridiculous Mario Physics Glitches

There's something about the physics or Mario games that has been hard-wired into our collective gaming brains. At this point, every gamer just kind of knows how Mario is supposed to act, given the physics of his world. So when rushed programming of sloppy edge cases change those physics, the result is a little surreal -- like seeing a childhood friend all grown up, or watching pornography starring favorite cartoon characters from your youth. Not that we've ever done either of those things.

Anyway, enjoy the videos after the break.

Super Mario Bros. -- Walk the Turtle

The best thing about this video is the extreme level of detail the author puts into the explanations, and the extreme dedication he shows by trapping turtles in the ground in every single possible location in the game. To honor such devotion, I think it's only fair that we officially make "walk the turtle" a euphemism for something incredibly dirty. Thoughts?

Super Mario Bros. -- Spider Thread

I guess I can kind of see why they call this the spider thread glitch: because it looks like the Bullet Bill in level 6-3 is suspending by a thin white line. But given the physics involved, the "Mario on Too Much Caffeine" glitch would be just as appropriate a name, don't you think?

Super Mario Bros. 2 -- Bomb Rider

Apropos of nothing, this glitch just makes me envision Luigi riding a bomb dropped from a plane, waving a cowboy hat in the air Dr. Strangelove-style. For putting that image in my mind, this glitch earns a place on this list.

Super Mario Bros. 2 -- The Squealing Key

There's a trio of interesting glitches in this video, but the most interesting comes around 2:36, when Luigi manages to make the previously inert key reveal its true nature when it flashes and lets out a little yelp of pain. I knew those things were secretly alive. Why else would Phanto want them so bad?

Super Mario Land - Every Glitch Ever

The original Super Mario Land was such a rushed production, even casual players can stumble across a lot of these glitches for warping through walls, phasing through enemies, jumping off walls and walking on ceilings. But this video earns a special place on this list for being set to the song "Cheap Thrills" by David Allen Coe. If that title doesn't describe all the glitches on this page accurately, I don't know what does.

Super Mario Bros. 3 - Kuribo's Tanooki Mario

This is my favorite glitch on the list if only because it combines two of the most obscure items in all of Mario-dom into an even more obscure glitch. The magic moment happens around 0:30 in the video, when a Tanooki Suit-statued Mario jumps into the ultra-rare Kuribo's Shoe and becomes an invincible, spiny-stomping machine! The only problem, as shown at 1:44 in the video, is that Kuribo's Tanooki Mario can never leave the level. But really, who would ever want to leave when you have such an awesome combination powers?

Super Mario Land 2 - What Lies Beneath

Aw, this level is boring. I'm gonna hit start-select and choose another level and OH MY GOD WHAT'S HAPPENING WHY AM I FALLING THROUGH THE FLOOR OH GOD NOTHING MAKES SENSE IN THIS HELLISH LANDSCAPE OF CUT OFF PIPES AND RANDOMLY ARRANGED BLOCKS AND oh, it's over? Whew!

Yoshi's Island - Eat Baby Mario

Damnit Baby Mario, I swear to God if you don't stop crying RIGHT NOW I am going to swallow you whole and convert you into an egg and throw you into the stratosphere. Don't think I can't do it... this video proves it's possible! That's better. Now stay quiet, mama's watching her stories.

Super Mario 64 - Mario Shot Dead

I can't decide what the best part of this video is: the fact that Mario crashes into an invisible ceiling at the top of the world, or the fact that he's apparently too dumb to realize he's dead until he lands in the water and immediately drowns. Decisions, decisions...

Super Mario Sunshine - Running Underwater

Is there anyone who likes swimming in a Mario game? It's slow, it's awkward to control, and you can't even jump on enemies. But it's the only way to get through the water-logged areas of the game, right? WRONG!

This last glitch also earns bonus points for the awful pun at 1:54 in the video.
