BioShock: The Movie, from the horse's mouth.
A few months ago, Gore Verbinski told the world that the estranged BioShock film wasn't so estranged after all. Much to our chagrin.

Well, Ken Levine has now corroborated Verbinski's claim, stating that it is "something [they] are actively talking about and actively working on."

It sounds a little different coming from the man himself, because that means someone who has a legitimately strong track record is involved. How involved? We don't know right now. It might just be an intellectual property thing.  But actively working is more than just ironing out the royalties, right?

First off, I'm going to beat a dead horse with a dead horse for a second. The general consensus at Joystick Division is that the game is perfect as it is, and it being rendered to celluloid could do nothing to further its prestige, legacy, or impact. It would more likely damage it. That's what we're about and we get perturbed by such news.

Ken Levine was pretty hush-hush about the thing, but he did say that it is imperative that the movie have a separate main character from Jack because, frankly, Jack was only our eyes in the game. Not a whole human to connect with.

But Levine's comments open up some interesting speculation to what, exactly, the movie could entail. It puts to rest our secondary worries while confirming our primary one, that Ken Levine is involved with the project (to the extent is uncertain), that the story will likely pick up a new protagonist, and that it looks like this shit will be created.

If it can be far enough away from the original story, it might have some value -- new character, maybe new setting -- a new set of circumstances. Because remember with the BioShock Infinite release Levine said that BioShock isn't Rapture or Andrew Ryan or 1960. It is a vibe, a philosophical and thoughtful look at a ridiculous microcosmic society and era.

Where it will end up, no one knows at this point. But I can guarantee you that wherever it lands, we'll be there to put in our highly-critical two cents.
