Should you be able to play as the Taliban in Medal of Honor?
The fact that you can play as the Taliban in the upcoming Medal of Honor isn't sitting well with some military families.

Over the weekend, Fox and Friends aired a segment about that game with Gold Star mother Karen Meridith, who lost her son in the war. Obviously, she's less than thrilled with the war being used as entertainment.

Obviously, this is territory that's been covered before, such as when Atomic Games' Six Days in Fallujah made headlines for the very same reason.

Although Fox News has given video games unfair and unbalanced coverage many times in the past, their treatment of Medal of Honor in the clip below is pretty measured. The host points out that most players of this game will be adults, and that in competitive games, some has to play the bad guy.

In reading some other sites' coverage of this same story, I've noticed that several other writers have cast Karen Meridith as unreasonable or in the wrong about her objections. While I'll defend the merits of video games to anyone and think that there's a legitimate place for games that tackle sensitive subjects, I also completely understand her problems with Medal of Honor. As much as we try to rationalize EA's (or anyone else's) right to make a game about the war in Afghanistan, games like these DO minimalize the real-world costs of war. They're supposed to, because they're entertainment first and foremost. EA has every right to make such a product, and military families have every right to be offended by them.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should note that I was formerly employed by the parent company of Six Days in Fallujah developer Atomic Games, although I had only minimal connections to the project.
