| The Best Consoles |
Now, over a quarter century later, video game manufacturers and console companies make up one of the largest industries on the planet. No longer can video games be called anything but a mainstream cultural and financial juggernaut.
With all the joys they've brought us, we feel like it's time to give the best some recognition. We present to you Joystick Division's shortlist for the most awesome video game consoles of all time!

10. Sega Dreamcast
Sixth Generation
The Sega Dreamcast got a big jump on the competition when it debuted in 1998. For a year or so, it managed to succeed at a high level, outselling the Nintendo 64 for a bit, while racking up a number of solid games to bolster its already strong selection. It featured a totally unique controller with a visual memory unit (VMU), which could display game related images and animations while the games were being played.
However, when the hugely-hyped PlayStaion 2 dropped in 2000, the Dreamcast fell behind. By 2001, it could not compete with the game selection of the Nintendo 64 or the technical aspects of the rest of the sixth generation consoles that were soon to be released.
It will, however, be remembered as a cult favorite and a pioneer in the sixth generation of home video game consoles. Look for some Dreamcast revival in the near future, as many of the games will be coming to the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.
Top Games: Soul Calibur, Resident Evil: Code Veronica X, Shenmue, Phantasy Star Online, NFL 2k1

9. Nintendo 64
Fifth Generation
The most beautiful thing about the Nintendo 64 for gamers was watching the their favorite Nintendo heroes rendered in new three dimensional worlds. From Mario to Legend of Zelda, it seemed like each classic franchise made the jump into the lush worlds without a hitch -- and they have provided us with some of the best gaming experiences to date.
There was a lot of innovation on the creative side of video game development, because the N64 could not perform great feats with its graphics card. Instead of shooting for crispness and realism, many games took on a lighter, more cartoonish look. The effect made some of the most memorable worlds and unique characters in video game history.
The Nintendo 64 was also the launch point for some of the most important games in video gaming. GoldenEye 007 kick-started the multiplayer FPS genre on consoles while Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64 brought some of gaming's best-loved characters into the new generation.
Top Games: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, GoldenEye 64, Super Smash Bros., Wave Race 64

8. Sega Genesis (Mega Drive)
Fourth Generation
When it first released, the Sega Genesis was a total dud in every country outside of Europe. There were fewer than half a million total sold in the inaugural year. The rest of the world just seemed focused on the Nintendo products that had been out for years already.
However, it boasted better technical aspects than the Nintendo Entertainment System, which was its direct competitor, and after a long smear campaign from Sega's marketing department, the Genesis began to gain sales in the US. By the time the SNES came out, the Genesis had a huge game selection and, for the time, there was no competition.
But now the Sega Genesis games have made a big comeback in the retro gaming world. A collector favorite, the Genesis games have been released in giant 'collectors packs' on nearly every system since. Good games stand the test of time, and the Genesis was chock full of them.
Top Games: Super Street Figheter II, Earthworm Jim, Mortal Kombat II, Sonic the Hedgehog, Castlevania

I also would have accepted seeing the SNES at the top of the list.
Posted 07/01/2010 at 09:20:39 AM360>SNES? ARE YOU A FUCKING IDIOTA
Posted 07/01/2010 at 09:30:36 PMWTF? No SNES, but 360 on there? Mr. Hawkins, you are a total moron.
Please, just leave editorials to IGN, Gamespot, etc. Don't worry, McDonald's is always hiring for a "marketing" spot.
Posted 07/01/2010 at 09:30:49 PMJames Hawkins do research before you rate your best consoles of all time because the xbox 360 is by far on the list of worst consoles of all time rod is still a problem and the snes and ps1 and dreamcast need to be on the top 5 slso the ps3 deserves to be on this list as well so as of rite now your list gets a 2 out of 10
Posted 07/01/2010 at 10:11:05 PMdremcastis the best
Posted 07/01/2010 at 11:04:04 PMI think that this is an excellent list minus it's failure to recognize that N64 is the best gaming system of all time. It shits on other gaming consoles. However, I just want to know that I am better than you.
@Banshee
SNES is on there. Titfuck.
@Mr Truth
Three-sixty is like the ultimate frat system it has the best competitive games ever. I'mg oing to tongue punch your mom's fart box and then read a book.
I am without a doubt the best person on this website.
All the rest of you are turdfarts.
It's important to recognize that all lists are opinions and that taking them seriously is about as smart as trusting a child with creating an anus from ass tissues. I want you all to realize that you are ridiculous and that poop will drip from your screens if you continue to assume that your "comments" hold the same value as a video game journalist's views.
Posted 07/01/2010 at 11:34:37 PMCan a basketball player that plays in 10 games before suffering a career ending injury be included in a best of all time list? 10th...
Posted 07/01/2010 at 11:39:23 PMNice article but.. the statement "the world hasn't seen anything like it" in reference to ps2's graphics, is wrong. Dreamcast launch titles look better than most (and some of todays) ps2 games.
Posted 07/02/2010 at 12:19:45 AMXbox 360 at number 4? The hell? It's not in the top 10. Get that piece of trash out.
Posted 07/02/2010 at 12:53:36 AMXbox 360 deserves to be there and so it is. What game console made online gaming what it is today? HUH? HUH? SAY IT!! Thank you. First to deliver HD, First to have a COMPLETE online. First to become a media box with TV and Movie downloads, Achievements, Gears Of War, Wireless as a default, Xbox Live Arcade, Halo 3, Video Chat, MSN connectivity, first to be reinvented by software, and a community worth the Netflix, last fm add ons. Now i know the PS3 has most of these, but remeber who did it FIRST. And PS3 is just stronger on the technical side. Free online and blu ray dont make it better
Posted 07/02/2010 at 01:03:31 AMNo PS3? Top's sucks.
Posted 07/02/2010 at 01:22:09 AMIf the junk Box 360 wasn't in the list it would be perfect! How can you give it such high marks when everyone one I know has had to get at least one new one if not two after it RROD on them! I had two of them but have conceded to the PS3!
Posted 07/02/2010 at 04:55:00 AMYour list could of been perfect! How can you give the junk Box 360 such high marks when everyone I know has went through at least 2 of them from the dreaded RROD! I had my two but have sense conceded to the PS3. Alright XBots lets hear it!
Posted 07/02/2010 at 05:04:08 AMYou make it seem like the N64 had a shitty graphics card... you do realize it was ahead of it's time and was well superior to the PS1, right?
Posted 07/02/2010 at 06:03:18 AMgreat list, although id love to see Sega Master System in there
Posted 07/02/2010 at 08:19:35 AMNo other console can compete with the X360 graphical capabilities or game selection?? Are you insane?? I thnk the best graphics on a console game till date belong to uncharted 2 and thats on a ps3!!!! And for "total package", might i remind you of the fantastic disaster that was HD-DVD?? Might i remind you of the fact that microsoft still tries to shove propriety stuff down ur throat?? And the fact that it charged yiou for its online services. Add it all up, it will cost more than the ps3!!It made the money with idiots actually bothering to pay for stuff that should have been free!! And the original X360 dint even support native 1080p!! it had to upscale, every single ps3 can output native 1080p. And the tech on the ps3 isnt even exhausted yet, while the X360 might be very close to maxing out!!

Posted 07/02/2010 at 09:04:18 AMHahahahahahahahahaha!!! Listen to all the ps3 douchebags cry out over the 360 at #4!!! Go cry to yo mama's losers!!!! Hahahahahahahahahahahahah!!!!
Posted 07/02/2010 at 09:20:22 AMThis article is absolutely full of fail. Putting the XBOX 360 ABOVE the SNES deserves castration, to say the least.
Posted 07/02/2010 at 12:48:05 PMStopped reading this lame article when he could not even get the release date for the Dreamcast right,,, it was released 9/9/1999 NOT 1998! Why does this drool get published and more-so why does it even make it to N4G?? I will steer clear of this page in the future.
Posted 07/02/2010 at 02:12:27 PMTrekster -
It was released in Japan in 1998. The US doesn't always get first pickins. You probably won't read this, though, because you are steering clear.
Posted 07/02/2010 at 04:05:09 PMI understand that you've decided to focus on the non-portable consoles here, but I think that's a mistake. The DS deserves to be on this list. Plain and simple. Need a reason? I think the fact that it just about prints money is enough proof. For all the marketing Nintendo does to suggest the Wii is exposing untapped audiences to video games, the DS did it first and better.
Posted 07/02/2010 at 05:58:55 PMJonathan -
The reason I left the hand held consoles off this list is so that I can specifically make a list FOR the hand held devices. These are the big ones...the little ones will get their time, too.
Thanks.
Posted 07/02/2010 at 06:14:21 PMNintendo 64 and PS2 I think were the best two ever, of all time

Posted 07/05/2010 at 07:44:19 PMSNES belongs at the top of any legitimate list of the top video game consoles. This list is bogus. Period.
Posted 07/05/2010 at 07:46:44 PMWould Game Boy count? It was handheld, but still a worthy console boasting a handful of classics. Man I beat the hell outta that thing. And it still works.
Posted 07/05/2010 at 07:54:58 PM^ I agree with you zack, snes is the best console ever made. But ps3
NES do belong to the list, but ti doesn't necessarily mean to be on top. that's my opinion xD hell I could make my own list anyway
http://www.playstation-move.org/
Posted 07/05/2010 at 07:58:02 PME.T. on the list of top games for the Atari? Seriously? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_video_game_burial
Posted 07/05/2010 at 08:06:14 PMWii?
Are you kidding? That thing is a gimmicky piece of shit. The N64 had MAYBE 4 good games on it. Also, you forgot the best videogame console of all time, the Neo Geo.
Posted 07/05/2010 at 08:07:04 PMI think some of you don't understand the point of this story. The best system of all time is not the most technically superior system. I see some that would say the PS2 should be the top. Well, I think the PS1 was much more innovative for it's time. N64, I guess but we were done with cartridge games. SNES was blown away by the Genesis. The original NES deserves the title spot. Console gaming would not be around today if it wasn't for that system. The market imploded during the time of the Atari 2600 and the NES was the only system that could pull it out. It had a good 10 year run which hasn't been matched by any other system.
Posted 07/05/2010 at 09:13:28 PMWhere the hell is my Colecovision on this list. And how is the Queen Mother of all these systems, the Atari 2600, only at #3.
The Xbox 360 and its infamous red ring of death is on the list, but the original Xbox which I still own and works perfectly is not.
Sorry friends, bogus list.
Posted 07/05/2010 at 09:51:43 PMWhat about the 3DO???
Posted 07/06/2010 at 12:35:05 AMNES is the obvious choice for #1.
Also, the Turbo Grafx CD should be mentioned, as it was the first CD system and debuted "Fighting Street"--aka Street Fighter.
Posted 07/06/2010 at 12:39:09 AMDecent list. No way the 360 should be on this list or at least that high, especially since it's fading fast compared to the PS3 and Wii
Posted 07/06/2010 at 10:25:32 AMIt's always surprising how many people I see trying to post their 'opinions' that come across as trolls.
Many of you realize that some of you come across as a-holes, right? Right?
I mean, do you really think that any list drawn up would please everyone, and that it would be universally accepted as the perfect top 10 console list?
Sorry for the rant. I just find it frustrating when people say rude things like "Bogus List" and "Why isn't xxxx on the list?!?!" when any and every list is relative to the person that rights it. It is his opinion, and he's entitled to it.
Interesting article James, I enjoyed the read.
Posted 07/06/2010 at 11:27:56 AMI am surprised by FFVIII taking the spot of notable games on the PS instead of FFVII. You must have been a fan of VIII moreso :)
for playstation, its final fantasy 7 as one of the top games, not final fantasy 8
Posted 07/06/2010 at 11:53:34 AMgood article! top ten lists are hard and dont let the fanboys get to you.
Posted 07/06/2010 at 12:17:19 PM360? Really? I mean you must have expected a ton of blow back for that. RROD causing people I know up to 3 replacements? Disc eating mayhem (that can be fixed for pennies per machine and still remains a problem to this day)??? All this from a multi billion dollar corporation? If that doesn't show Microsoft's cheap side and lack of respect for the gamer, I don't know what does.
Let's not forget how their exclusive content and much of their great features were often acquired by buying out the competition and game developers. Micro$oft has a lot of cash to throw around to get on the top of the game and gamers blindly follow it.
Posted 07/06/2010 at 12:19:16 PMYeah I believed this would be decent at least but then 360 over SNES? Retard...but then what do you expect from someone who lists Final Fantasy 8 as one of the greatest ps1 games of all time...
Posted 07/06/2010 at 12:30:19 PMYou are all correct about the Final Fantasy VII listing...that was a total typo on my behalf. I have changed it to appease you.
Posted 07/06/2010 at 12:33:53 PMOh man, they forgot about the N-Gage
Posted 07/06/2010 at 01:07:33 PMhow in the world is Nintendo 64 at #9?
Posted 07/06/2010 at 02:14:32 PMit should be #2 below NES!
everybody bashing the 360, shutup. the reason it's on the list is that it got online gaming right the first time, unlike the PS3, which had a relatively bad internet setup. it has gotten better, but the 360 still offers more to date.
Posted 07/06/2010 at 05:10:12 PMWe have 4 X-Box 360s in my apartment and none of them have ever had the RROD. Maybe you turds should stop humping your consoles or whatever you're doing to screw them up so much.
This is a perfectly fine list. If you're that offended by it I assume you've never touched a real pair of tits.
Posted 07/06/2010 at 07:05:29 PMRight consoles, wrong order. Top five should have been:
1)SNES
Posted 07/06/2010 at 07:56:35 PM2)PS2
3)NES
4)Megadrive/Genesis
5)PS1
Agreed with the very first poster, this list is bogus. You honestly ranked the very flawed 360 in the top 5 because no system can compete with the games it has or the online capabilities? The online Effing sucks on the 360, so much better on the PS3 and the game selection is null now considering 90% of the games released today are released on both major systems (not including wii) and the games that are exclusive to 360 aint that terribly super awesome. Name one that isn't fanboy halo or GOW (which i admit is really good). The main problem i have is this list sounds like it was written by a person who only grew up with 5th generation systems and didn't experience the older awesome stuff until he watched retro reviews online.
Posted 07/06/2010 at 09:47:19 PMMass Effect series, Forza, Fable, XBox Live Arcade games, to name a few.
Also, I believe that consoles from all generations deserving are properly represented. And retro fanboyism thinks that pre-1999, everything was the best. Just not the case.
Posted 07/07/2010 at 03:11:19 AMThis list is a good one I have to admit. Personal opinion, 360 shouldnt be ranked as high and the N64 shouldnt be on the list, but very compelling points to why they were on there.
Now, like with anything posted about consoles now-a-days, people will always reject opinions because it doenst match with their own. The reason I respect this list? Facts. Its not just because "this console had this game" or "this console does that", thats fanboyism. And its true, the top 3 consoles (dont kid yourself anyone else) is the main reason why videogames have started AND where they are today within our pop-culture.
The funny thing is Im a PC gamer, very few concider themselves one anymore these days. Sad really, because all we can fanboy about against anyone else is a gamepad vs Mouse and Keyboard in FPSes. Which all just really boils down to preference lol.
Posted 07/07/2010 at 09:28:03 AMWhy is SNES not number one?
Posted 07/07/2010 at 06:28:37 PMWhile I think the list is generally good, I'm surprised the infamous xbox360 is so high on the list, with it's tendancy to break. (And as a PC gamer, I reject your assertion that Mass Effect is xbox exclusive.) I'm also surprised not to see the game boy on the list, since Nintendo is the only company to get handheld gaming right, and that, I believe, is worth mentioning.
Posted 07/08/2010 at 02:32:56 PMpac man and E.T., really pac man was terrible on the 2600 and E.T. almost single handedly started the video game crash.
Posted 07/11/2010 at 04:14:30 PMwow! xbox 360 is on there, and PS3 not? yes bogus list indeed. Xbox 360 shouldn´t be on the list, while ps3 should. all the 7th gen consoles were announced at the same time with capabilites, but microsoft decided to hurry it´s production to reach a christmas sale, while nintendo and sony decided to finalise the projects first. sorry but get your storys stright.
Posted 07/20/2010 at 11:29:10 PMNo Intellivision?
Posted 07/25/2010 at 10:17:54 AMit was very interesting to read www.joystickdivision.com
Posted 07/29/2010 at 04:24:03 PMI want to quote your post in my blog. It can?
And you et an account on Twitter?
Okay scott now you may not now but the 3do sucks so hard that it failed miserably
Posted 08/07/2010 at 11:13:15 AMok?
Where is the NES? Where is the PS3? Fair enough you may prefer the XBOX360 but the reasoning on this list is "it's the most complete gaming package". Are you taking the piss? No built in wireless? Subscrition for online? Dies if you touch it?
Awful list.
Posted 08/21/2010 at 10:02:40 AMyour stupid as hell! you dont even have playstation 3!
