Five Heavy Metal Video Game Song Covers

| Metal Mario: The heaviest version of Mario. |
We love heavy metal.
Naturally, there's only one thing to do: share some heavy metal versions of video game theme songs!
There are plenty of quality covers of video game theme songs, and these are some of our favorites metal reinterpretations of some iconic gaming music. If you see any other heavy metal video game covers that we need to be made aware of, please send them our way.
Until then, enjoy the videos below, because it's never too early to start rocking!
The Super Mario Bros. Castle theme, death metal version.
There always has to be a Super Mario song in one of these lists, and these guys get it for choosing a song other than the main theme.
The Mortal Kombat metal theme
Props to this guy for taking a pretty heavy techno song and making it into an even heavier metal song.
Kraid's Lair from Metroid, symphonic metal version
A nice cover and a good performance, plus the video playthrough of Metroid is damn impressive.
The Legend of Zelda theme
Playing a video game cover on YouTube is one thing. Playing one live on stage is something completely different.
The Tetris theme
One of the catchiest video game themes of all time now sounds more epic than ever before.

Comments
The Metroid clip was fantastic, but the game end screen made me think of Prince of Space (courtesy of MST3K), and I kept saying "Your weapons have no effect on me!" and giggling to myself for the remainder of the clip.
Posted 07/14/2010 at 03:14:35 PMThis article is lacking an homage to metroidmetal.com and the guys who have collaborated to make such an awesome project possible. This comment isn't lacking though... Go check it out for yourself, I've been following them since '04.
Posted 07/14/2010 at 10:08:56 PMSystem of a Down did an amazing cover of Legend of Zelda, even made up words!
Posted 07/14/2010 at 10:37:09 PMHow could you leave out Megadeth's version of the Duke3D theme song? And at least mention that the Doom theme was based on a slayer song.
Posted 07/14/2010 at 11:05:10 PMPowerglove has versions of Mortal Kombat, Zelda, and Tetris that blow these ones out of the water. They also play just as awesome live as on the album.
The Super Mario cover here is pretty awesome though.
Posted 07/14/2010 at 11:06:44 PMAlex, that was NOT done by SoaD.
Rabbit Joint did that.
Also, nice finds. Loved the Metroid one, especially. Kraid has always been my favourite theme from the first Metroid game.
Posted 07/14/2010 at 11:17:42 PMAll I have to say is The Protomen
Posted 07/14/2010 at 11:53:36 PMYou all should check out The Protomen, their music is a story of MegaMan. I saw them here in austin at SXSW and they rocked
Posted 07/15/2010 at 12:05:05 AMWith the exception of Metroid, all of those songs were done by Powerglove, and they did a far better job on all of them.
Mario (main theme): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4l1n69jTArI
Mortal Kombat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_ztfuC-VUU
Zelda: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6doJ0ErfSHg
Tetris: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trGkPerU3-k
Lack of Metroid can be excused, as they also did F-Zero, Power Rangers and a lot more.
Posted 07/15/2010 at 04:20:44 AMThanks for all the feedback, guys. We may have to do another list of metal covers some time.
Posted 07/15/2010 at 10:09:43 AMArmCannon's metroid - kraid is better than the one posted above in my opinion.
The Mortal Kombat version posted above was pretty weak.
PowerGlove suck.

PooP, short for Poo Poo
Posted 07/15/2010 at 12:10:38 PMNo System of a Down and their inspired cover of the Zelda theme song? How can someone supposed to look into metal covers forget about one of the most fundamental band of the last 20 years. Clahn!
