There are currently four playable characters. Each of them are primary characters in the comic book: Scott Pilgrim; His girlfriend, Ramona Flowers; the lead singer in Scott's band "Sex Bob-Omb" Steven Stills; and Sex bob-omb's drummer, Kim Pine. Each character plays the same except for varying special moves.
The game played like a traditional beat-em-up. Players can move both forward and backwards, as well as up and down on a Z-axis. Bad guys come from all angles and it's up to Scott and his buddies to defeat them. The enemies will then disappear leaving nothing but a few Canadian coins on the ground. Characters gain levels for defeating enemies and, in turn, learn new moves.
Each character in the game has their own special move. Scott Pilgrim's, for example, is a spinning lariat similar to Zangeif's in the Street Fighter franchise. Money in the game can be used to purchase food in shops to both gain bonus experience and regain health.
The game played and felt like the beat-em-ups of old (as it should). It felt aware of the references it was making, but in a good way. Expect the game on PSN in August and sometime later on Xbox Live Arcade.
