Not too long ago I got the chance to sit down with Kalypso Media and get a look at a couple of games. One of them, as you may have seen was M.U.D. TV, and the other was an early version of the DarkStar One port for the Xbox 360. There haven't been a whole lot of space combat simulators in the past decade, so fans of the genre are probably already familiar with DarkStar One - Broken Alliance on the PC.
But for those of you who aren't, or if you interested in the port details, read on!

The main story -- which offers about thirty hours of play-time -- revolves around our protagonist, Kayron Jarvis, and his ship the DarkStar One. Although Jarvis is the main hero of our story, the ship itself takes on that mantle when it comes to gameplay. Much like an RPG character, the DarStar One is fully customizable with a thousand different theoretical configurations of shields, energy generators, missiles, laser cannons, etc. And just like any good RPG character, maintaining the proper balance is integral to your success.

The game is as much about exploration and commerce as it is story and combat -- there are 330 different star systems, a bevy of asteroid fields potentially containing pirate hideouts, and a fully fleshed out economic system continuously running in the background. Free gameplay is at the heart of it all, allowing the player to be a pirate, mercenary, smuggler, killer -- whatever class alignment you desire -- but at the same time requiring story advancement in order to gain access to new sectors. There are of course perks and repercussions for each class, but if you don't like one, there are deeds that can be done to alter your alignment accordingly.
