The Japanese video game industry has been in a slump for years, but Final Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Motomu Toriyama think that their game can bring it back from the brink of death. In interview with the European PlayStation Blog, one of the two said:
"Some people have been saying that the Japanese game industry is dead, and all that... I dunno," the creative lead said. "I will say that Final Fantasy XIII is one really epic title for high definition consoles. With this game, we are going to resurrect the whole thing." And then they immediately moved from boastful to confusing: "As for Western games that have influenced us - FPSs mostly. The Call of Duty series, for example."
Final Fantasy XIII sold over a million copies the first day it was available in Japan, so clearly Japanese gamers still care about the franchise. But is one game enough to revive a slumping industry? Only time will tell.

Will this comment revitalize the game journalism commenting industry? Only time will tell.

But seriously, FFXIII will undoubtedly be a hit. Unfortunately, a single game does not a recovery make. Other game companies wouldn't directly benefit from the success of one of their competitors. A rising tide does lift all boats, as they say, but if there's no one else able to follow up then it'll only be a short term blip on the economy.

If success can inspire more focus on the industry and heavy industry competition, it'll be a catalyst.
