New Miss America Slams Video Games

On Saturday, something deep and culturally important happened. I probably don't need to tell you, as I'm sure you were glued to the coverage just like everyone else in the world. But in case you missed it by some strange fluke, I'll fill you in: the new Miss America was crowned. Miss Virginia Caressa Cameron was awarded the crown at Planet Hollywood, and she promptly used her new fame to decry video games.

"Take away the TV, take away the video games, set some standards for our children!" she said in her winner's interview. Okay, that's a pretty gentle slam and it also addresses TV as well as games, but regardless are we going to let her judge our hobby because she's got a crown? I think not. That's not what this country is about, people!

Aside from slamming video games, Miss America will be as the spokesperson for IHOP's National Pancake Day. Seriously.

"Take away the TV! Except for when I'm on it! Like I am right now!"

The scary thing here is how adversely this will affect the video game market. If I know one thing, and I hope I do, it's that teenage boys all the way up to 40-something men listen when Miss America speaks.

I hope publishers take this into account for their next shareholder meetings and quarterly projections.

This is exactly what this country is about. She's free to say whatever she wants, we're free not to listen.

The "world" is not really interested in Miss America.

I for one will make sure my kids(if I ever have any) do nothing, but watch TV and play video games. I would cut down a little if say she gave me something better to do with the time...like her for instance!

She's right, our time would have been much better spent pruning and preening for a chance to win a plastic crown and a delicious pancake endorsement.

This proves there are no academic qualifications to be Miss America. Take away the TV so millions of people will not watch me become the new Miss America. What an idiot. Beauty pageants, how could this world ever survive without them?
So, are "her" standards focused on outer beauty instead of inner beauty then?

I don't think she meant for the gaming industry to die or that we all need to stop playing video games.

I personally am a gamer and I grew up playing outdoors when I was a kid.

However, that was when I was a child. I think she was talking about our children get outdoors. Probably that age from say...2-11? 12 maybe even? Too many parents put their kids in front of a tv on a summer day and let their brains rot out from 9 am to about 8 pm, even though it's a gorgeous day outside.

I agree that children shouldn't be pampered with video games and television. And I don't think that the new Miss America believed that the video game industry needs to die or whatever. Us adults are old enough to decide for ourselves how much sun and outdoors time we want. And how much game time we want.

She wasn't slamming video games, she's slamming parents who give their children piles and piles of video games and not enough time physically play.

@Newbs joke right?
Pretty sure the only men who watch this is because their wife is watching it.
This will just blow over the Video game market like it never happened.

I think she is right... if the kids would spend more times outside running, playing ball, sports and developing their social skills we would be much better off. I don't think being radical is the answer. but life outdoors = healthy, less like to be Obese and less chances of becoming a crazy murderer due to isolation.

I was raised with unrestricted TV and Video Games.. and today I wish my parents have made me go out and unplug more often.

Lets also reduce or get rid of beauty pageants to help all the nonperfect young girls out there. Couldnt you be doing something better with your time than just trying to look pretty and getting by on it?

Billiam said:

All right. You no longer are fit to be Miss America.

I've played video games ever since I can remember and I've turned out just fine. I have very good hand-eye coordination from it (never played baseball or anything, although I played soccer for several years). Sometimes you just need to get away from life and have fun, which is something that adults forget about. So, if you take someone's favorite method of fun away, then you're only hurting them. Nice job!

Rhygin said:

Sorry guys, she is right and if you don’t like what she has to say you have your head buried in a deep hole. I play but I know when to stop. And being older I did get out and play all day for hours. Miss America is on once a year, you guys spend thousands of hours producing nothing, and she has a life. Put that on your headstone.

Victor said:

@Rhygin,
and you know we all do nothing how exactly?
And being Miss America isn't anything but looking pretty and saying nice shit, so don't tell me she has a life and we don't.

Gamer4life said:

Like anyone takes anything a Miss America winner says seriously.

Dread said:

I was about to say that Rhygin IS Miss America, but too much of that post was spelled correctly.

@Billiam. Eye-hand coordination, eh? How's that working out for you at your paddle-ball job? That's the BS reason I used to give my mom when she told me to turn off the NES and get outside or study. I'm a pilot, so MAYBE it was helpful, but give me a break... the studying and being physically fit was more important. "eye-hand coordination" is a load of crap. The only people making money in a real career from "eye-hand coordination" got it by doing something other than playing video games... Then again, maybe you work with Laverne and Shirley at the bottle-capping plant.. congratulations, buddy.

Honestly, she has a point when it comes to children. I have a 3 yr old and my kid will NEVER have a TV in his bedroom and until he's into his teens, he'll have very limited access to an xbox or anything similar.

Kids need to be outside.

It always frustrates me when parents complain about their kids being overweight and/or ADD and then you find out the kid is always inside.

Connection?

outers55 said:

I love video games, but considering the average person spends something like 5+ hours a day in front of the TV I'd say she's got a point.

Gaucho said:

I don't have a problem with that if I can play with her instead.
