New Super Mario Bros. Wii Running At 1080p

So this guy on YouTube has some gameplay of New Super Mario Bros. Wii running through a PC emulator called Dolphin. The footage has some obvious audio hiccups and the video freezes at 1:10 until 1:18. Beautiful nonetheless.

Other than that, it puts YouTube's new 1080p converter to good use and looks incredible. The creator of the video claims the game was running perfectly fine at 60 FPS, but using Fraps to record brought him down to 30 FPS. Once again, Fraps kills the fun! Oh well, it's still brilliant.

Check it out below (after the jump):

I did not realize that they developed full 1080p graphics, considering the wii can only output 480p. I actually can't tell right now on the fullscreen output if it is 1080p graphics. Am I misunderstanding something?

Interesting!

This is an wii emulation. It's not actually running through the wii, therefore it can manifest its own resolutions.

I don't like how the did the "low gravity" effect on jumps and such... it seems, for lack of a better word, retarded.

someone needs to teach him how to play super mario. you're suppose to jump on all the goombas.....

Gonzobot said:

Dudes leave him alone, new super mario bros is hard. Nevermind that its hard because they took out the part where Mario listens to your controller.

It says in the article that FRAPS caused it to be recorded at 30fps..fkn idiot.

No, you fucking idiot, he's talking about the way Mario jumps like a plastic bag caught in a breeze. A reduction in the accepted "norm" of gravity is causing it and it's what's allowing Mario to change his direction in mid-air multiple times. Without it today's gamer would likely become highly irritated with this game as most people are fucktarded when it comes to platformers.

It has nothing to do with the frame rate, you incompetent amateur dickwad...

Jon- in regards to running the game in 1080p:

I believe it can be up-scaled perfectly because everything is built with 3D modeling and with what appears to be vector-based textures. This is great, because it means we don't have to see things like we did on Mario 64, which was also 3D, but with rasterized (pixel-based) textures. That's why when you were right behind a fence, it looked like a bastardized cut-out-and-blown-up jpeg Bowser crapped out. It also means that there's a chance that the Wii's successor will support HD graphics, and all the games we've already bought will look absolutely stunning. (I can hope, right?!)

This isn't the old days of NES & SNES when the games were designed by drawing pixels for each game sprite. Even though it still looks like a cartoony SMB game, it's actually all built in 3D, with wireframes and textures built on top. Apparently, even the textures are vector-based, so even when you scale it up to

My girlfriend isn't a gamer at all, but I got her addicted to New Super Mario Bros.

Is this Dolphin emulator available to the public? or is it his own creation?

Why 30 fps?

Fraps can do 60 fps.

brink said:

so what the "ucking idiot" said is that the guy got the game working in dolphin, then decided to hack the game's gravity? Okay......

speaking from a viewpoint of NOT an idiot who pulls assumptions out of his ass, the actual game does not perform at this speed, and the controls are very similar to every Mario game, if I had to say which in particular it feels very similar to the SNES Mario games.

are we STILL playing mario games? STILL!?!?

Mario Bros in 1080p is about as impressive as watching Who's the Boss on Blu-ray...who cares?

Romo said:

This person is terrible at SMB. absolutely terrible

striker said:

the person playing this I assume was going for just a quick show of how it looked.

however, since this game wasn't truly designed to be stunning visually, I say, who cares? I'll still play it for fun platforming adventures.

PS, this video makes it look slow, but from what I've seen it is actually much faster normally.

Bull. The only time Mario changes directions more than once in midair is with the Propeller Hat which you can clearly see in the video. The rest of the floatiness is attributed to the fact that this is being viewed at half speed. NSMB Wii's physics are fairly heavy compared to other Mario's, and slightly heavier than it's DS brethren.

Super Mario World's jumps/bouncing off enemies was WAY floatier (with more control to move around in midair) than this game; from someone who played both consecutively just recently..
