It's not the best time to be a PC gamer. Infinity Ward's announcement about dropping dedicated server support in Modern Warfare 2 sent shock-waves through every corner of the PC gaming community.

Now it seems one of the PC world's most beloved developers, id Software could be following Infinity Ward's gallant charge. During an interview with Variety, id co-founder and gaming icon John Carmack spoke about dedicated servers in the company's latest flagship product, Rage:

"It's not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don't think we will have dedicated servers," Carmack says.

It seems id is simply sitting on the sidelines waiting to see how Modern Warfare 2 PC sales do despite the backlash:

"The great thing is we won't have to be a pioneer on that. We'll see how it works out for everyone else."
He also mentions that he believes dedicated servers are something "remnant of the early days of PC gaming."
