Sounding like a news story from 1987, Nintendo has overtaken Apple as the
best company in the world. BusinessWeek barely talks about the best company in the world, so I'll sum it up. "A commitment to innovation, diversified portfolios, aggressive expansion," have led Nintendo to it being named "Best" (with a captial b).
Nintendo seems to have the edge on Apple because of its "aggressive expansion" in Japan, Euope and America, Apple not so much in the Land of the Rising Sun. I wonder if the huge amount of money employees at Nintendo
generate and
make has anything to do with their newborn status.
It does seem interesting that Nintendo and Apple are the top two, according to BusinessWeek, as they have had a similar path since the 80's. Both were the biggest names in their fields, inspired innovation with an amazing fanbase, did pretty well in the early 90's, started to lose real market-share by the mid 90's despite major innovation (N64, Mario64, Zelda: Ocarina, and iMac and Newton), and when their biggest innovation was made they became larger than ever (iPod and Wii).
The two companies kind of grew up together, not really bothering each other. That is until Steve Jobs declared Apple
would take them out. But kudos to Nintendo, they have been through something akin to the 12 Labors of Hercules to get here.
