Activision's latest "Hero", DJ Hero, is not living up to its name according to new demand expectations data from analyst Doug Creutz of Cowan and Company. Cruetz believes the lack in music game sales are because gamers are being turned away by high priced music games during the recession and that the Guitar Hero fad has perhaps run its mile.

Cruetz claims GH3 brought too many "one-time" buyers into the franchise:
"We probably underestimated the extent to which the 2007-08 peak in Guitar Hero unit sales was driven by the extreme amount of buzz around the product. In retrospect Guitar Hero III likely attracted a lot of one-time buyers (that have not returned for subsequent franchise installments) due to its 'it-game' status at the time."

Cowan and Company's U.S. sales expectations for 4Q 2009 were originally 1.6 million, but are now down to a mere 600,000 units with year sales expected at only 950,000 (down from 2.5 million).

Despite this, Creutz says:
"We still believe that DJ Hero will be an important part of Activision Blizzard's music franchise strategy, but we think it may take a few versions of the game for it to reach its full market potential (similar to the original Guitar Hero)."

The reason it's not selling, is the game sucks. People love guitar, people do not love 'scratching' - unless you're a guy... tee hee

well, they must have known it was going to be a dud because I saw it at Best Buy on the floor - you could play, but it wasn't shipping until a week or so from the day I saw it.

How about, F*#k Bobby Kotick and all the sales he takes for granted? How about Bobby Kotick not forcing another lame reiteration or sequel down our throats? How about Infinity Ward gets as far from Activision as possible and MAYBE I'll start buying their games.

Look, the reason no one's buying "DJ Hero" is that there's absolutely nothing escapist about being a DJ. No one wants to be a DJ. You can't -- in a nutshell -- impress girls or look cool by spinning. No kid sees a music video and thinks, "Man, when I grow up, I'm going to be the guy who cuts that song off early to play a couple bars from the middle of 'Thriller' before seguing into something funky."

Doesn't look to fun to me. Maybe it's too expensive!

Oh Bobby... I this is getting us one step closer to your dream of "taking the fun out of games". I think the product and the tracklist looks good, but the price is way out of reach. They can't slap "Hero" on everything and expect it to perform at the level of GH3.
However, I'm POSITIVE they planned for this, and it's the reason the price is so high. They are making such a huge profit off the $119.99 MSRP and then they can drop it at a "huge savings" to the consumer to $99.99. At that price they probably still are making a nice profit.

Bullshit! Every kid I know loves the DJ! You jackasses don't know shit about hip hop or the power that a good DJ has on a party!

Mikey said:

right on, billy! Everyone loves DJ's.

This one time i was at a party and the dj played this song and everyone was like "right on!" and then no one gave a crap anymore because no one really cares about the DJ unless they screw up.

Yeah, you are a DJ and no one here cares.
