The Australian Classification Board has refused to give Left 4 Dead 2 a rating in the country, citing "violence that is high in impact and is therefore unsuitable for persons under age 18 to play."

Valve is appealing the decision, but in the meantime they have submitted an edited version to the Classification Board that the company hopes will conform to their MA15+ rating. The Review Board is expected to announce their decision on October 22.

If the appeal is successful, Valve will release a patch that converts the edited version to the full version of the game.

This incident shows that perceptions of violence vary from culture to culture. What is considered acceptable in one country may be scandalous in another. The Left 4 Dead 2 controversy illustrates the perils of globalized gaming.
