NXE is Live

In case you're one of those weirdos who doesn't turn on their Xbox first thing in the morning,* the New Xbox Experience update has gone live. The NXE completely alters the look of the Xbox dashboard and adds new features to boot. I messed around with it a bit this morning, creating an Avatar (Because it's mandatory - lame) and setting up the best new feature, Netflix streaming. Applying the update and setting things up took less than ten minutes, athough the Netflix feature requires an additional download and entering a code on the Netflix website from your PC. I'm not at all impressed with the Mii-lite Avatar system, but otherwise the NXE is slick, easy and welcome. I've been waiting so long to stream episodes of Law & Order to my TV!
*Or you're Gary, whose Xbox is currently broken.

Was able to create my avatar last night. Not impressed. Since I don't have a really good option to make a zombie me, I tried to make an avatar that looks kinda like me (with a giant head). This is also near impossible. I can make a hipster version of me, but nothing that looks really like me. 2 major issues with the creation system. 1 body shape, you can be skinny to plump, but not really fat. How will Harry Knowles make his character? I went for a Yukon Cornelius look (for some holiday cheer), but this was also unavailable. 2 Facial hair options are terrible. I have a big burly beard, but apparently avatars can only have about a weeks worth of growth. Also, while you can have a 70's pornstar mustache, good luck if you have any other upper lip fuzz. C'mon Microsoft, give us a little more variety than "facial scar"
